The Breskens lighthouse, built in 1868, is the oldest remaining cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands and one of the most iconic buildings in West Zeeland Flanders. This octagonal, black and white painted tower was built in 1866-1867 to a design by the Dutch architect Quirinus Harder.
Lighthouse Nieuw Sluis stands on the sea dike at the entrance to the Westerschelde, has a height of 28.4 meters and has five floors. It is part of a series of lights that mark the end of the Scheldt and guide shipping traffic between the North Sea and Antwerp.
In 2011, the lighthouse was decommissioned and demolition threatened. Thanks to the efforts of the Breskens Lighthouse Foundation, the national monument was fully renovated and opened to visitors in 2015.
