The American white-headed eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey that breeds in Canada and the United States. At the end of the twentieth century the bird was on the verge of extinction, but the population has now recovered to a stable level.
Unlike the African white-tailed eagle, the American white-tailed eagle has a beak that is completely yellow. The adult bird is completely dark brown with a white head and tail.
Adult females have a wingspan of about 200 cm, up to 244 cm. Males are about 25% smaller than females.
Photographed at the birds of prey show in Safaripark Beekse Bergen.
