In this picture you are looking at a piece of lost history of Amsterdam. An Amsterdam that will never return, unless you lose yourself in this picture.
The photographer is standing where the Beurspassage is now, and has his camera pointed in the direction of the Dam. Approximately where the Beurspassage is now was the Baafjessteeg at the end of the 19th century.
On this scan of a glass negative we see among other things an organ shop, a taproom, a newspaper shop, a gas engine factory and of course the handcarts.
Before people took photographs with the classic roll of film, they used glass plates on which they put light-sensitive material. These old negatives are called glass negatives.
