The Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam with the Poppenhuis in the middle. It replaced the building called the Gulden Steur was built in 1601 by Jan Poppen. In 1642, his grandson Joan Poppen had the current building built on that spot. The converted Catholic Joan Poppen had a new house, without the then customary indoor warehouse, designed by Philips Vingboons, also Catholic and an architect of distinction in those circles. Vingboons designed a building in the style of Dutch classicism. The facade of this building is the first example of a Palladian facade designed by Philips Vingboons. When it was built, the pediment featured the family crest, which was removed in the 18th century by the building's then owners. The building is now known as the Vincentius House.
