About ‘Amsterdam at its most beautiful’ by Dirk van Egmond
Amsterdam owes its name to its location at a dam in the Amstel river that was constructed in the 13th century. The place received city rights shortly after 1300, became a place of pilgrimage in 1345 as a result of the Amsterdam Miracle, and in the Golden Age developed into one of the most important ports and trading cities in the world.
