Just over the border near Megchelen in the Achterhoek region is the beautiful Castle and Water Castle Anholt in Isselburg. Built before 1169, this castle is currently a museum and castle and privately occupied. The moated castle is surrounded by 35 hectares of beautiful castle park. Right next to the historic landscape park is a golf course and the wildlife park the Anholter Schweiz. To this day, the Anholt water castle is one of the few buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia that are still in private hands, but can be toured on a guided tour. Visitors get an insight into the representative salons, private quarters and the house's 1,000-year history. The art to be discovered still testifies to the family's passion for collecting, whether it be porcelain, Baroque furniture, glass, coins, weapons or the historical book collection. In 1966, a museum was opened in the castle, the Museum Wasserburg Anholt. It gives visitors an insight into social life and court culture at Anholt. It holds the largest private collection of paintings in North Rhine-Westphalia with numerous works by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Jan van Goyen and Gerard ter Borch.
