About ‘Ancient Roman racecourse’ by Eddy Smets

The photo shows an impressive remnant of an ancient Roman racecourse, located in the heart of ancient Rome. In the time of emperors such as Nero, Caligula and Julius Caesar, this track was the scene of spectacular horse races that entertained the people, but often served power politics on a deeper level. The people were kept in line with such public displays, with emperors not only strengthening their position of power but also satisfying the people with a constant stream of excitement and thrills.

A lively place of competition and entertainment, this racecourse was more than just a sporting arena. It was a symbol of Rome's imperialism, where the elite displayed their wealth and influence, and the common people were immersed in a world of extravagant displays. While horse racing was popular, Rome was also known for its bloody gladiator fights in the amphitheatre, where life and death merged in a brutal dance.
