The Kingdom of Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy with King Norodom Sihamoni as its head of state. The Cambodian government is headed by Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia. His reign has been in effect since 1985, making him the longest reigning leader in Southeast Asia.
Cambodia's ancient name is "Kambuja" (Sanskrit: कंबुज).[5] In the year 802, Jayavarman II declared himself king, marking the beginning of the Khmer Empire, which flourished for over 600 years. It allowed successive kings to dominate most of Southeast Asia with its great power and wealth. During the Khmer Empire, monumental temples such as Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear were built and facilitated the spread of first Hinduism and then Buddhism across almost all of Southeast Asia. After the fall of Angkor to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in the 15th century, Cambodia was ruled as a vassal state between its neighbors until the formation of the Union of Indochina, formed by the French in the 19th century. Cambodia became an independent state on 9 November 1953 under King Norodom Sihanouk.
