Andromeda is a figure from Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of the Ethiopians.
In Greek mythology, Andromeda was rescued by the hero Perseus from a sea monster, to which she was sacrificed.
Perseus had just defeated Medusa and flew past Ethiopia with his winged horse Pegasus when he saw Andromeda chained to the rock with only jewellery as clothing. He fell in love instantly and offered to save the wailing Cassiopeia and Cepheus to save their daughter and defeat the monster. In exchange he would marry her. The parents agreed and Perseus killed the monster, here a mass of a snake and a dragon.
Here the maid is chained, naked to a rock in the sea. The shipowner of the woman plunges on the monster with her wings.
The princess jumps out of the artwork through the perfectly drawn bare body, with legs, hip, abdomen, torso, breasts and arms bare.
Paul Gustave Doré (Strasbourg, France, 6 January 1832 - Paris, 23 January 1883) was a French visual artist, engraver and illustrator.
