About the artwork

The Bridge of Angels (Ponte Sant'Angelo) is an originally Roman bridge in Rome. The bridge connects the Castle of the Angels (Castel Sant' Angelo) to the other side of the Tiber. In 1527, statues of Peter and Paul were placed on the bridge by order of Pope Clement VII. More statues of the patriarchs, the evangelists and Adam, Noah, Abraham and Moses followed later. These statues were already so dilapidated by 1669 that Pope Clement IX commissioned the famous sculptor Bernini to make 10 new statues of angels. Bernini made only two statues himself and these were so liked by Pope Clement IX that he kept them himself instead of placing them on the bridge. The other statues that now stand on the bridge were made by Bernini's pupils, including Antonio Giorgetti. These angels seem to have just descended from heaven, holding out to the faithful the irrefutable truth of the gospel. This truth is depicted as the angels display all the implements of Christ's martyrdom. In iconography, these objects are called the Arma Christi.
