The Arch of Titus was built at the highest point of the Via Sacra, on the hill Velia. This is the entrance to the Roman Forum from the Colosseum valley. The arch was supposedly built by emperor Domitian in 81 AD, in honour of his deified brother and predecessor Titus. The monument was thus built posthumously, and has nothing to do with Titus's triumph in 71, who is depicted on it, however.
The arch of honour is built of marble and is 13.5 metres wide, 15.5 high and 4.75 deep. The passage is 8.3 metres high and 5.36 wide. A statue of Titus in a chariot pulled by elephants probably used to stand atop the arch. The arch is the oldest standing arch of honour in Rome.
The photo was shot in September 2023 in Rome, Italy.
