This picture was taken in Kootwijk.
Radio Kootwijk is a former transmitter park on the Veluwe, west of the town of Apeldoorn, which in the first half of the 20th century formed an important communication link between the Netherlands and its then colonies, particularly the Dutch East Indies. It was built from 1918 onwards.
After considering several sites, the choice fell on a piece of Veluwe, a sparsely populated tract of land.
The piece of forest and heathland totalling 450 hectares, purchased from the Forestry Commission, was still completely unexploited in 1917.
A radio station was built at its heart.
This was housed in a reinforced concrete building designed by Amsterdam School architect Julius Luthmann.
