Artistic impression of "In de Waag" Amsterdam
Located in a former city gate, with a large terrace. Restaurant-cafe In de Waag is located in one of the old city gates (1488) of Amsterdam and now forms the impressive center of the Nieuwmarkt.
Originally, the city gate was part of the medieval city encirclement along the current Singel, Kloveniersburgwal and Geldersekade. Of the city gates, only old photos, Waag and the Munttoren, remained. The name 'Waag' was later assigned to the building, named after one of the many functions that the building had. A waag was a building where goods were weighed, city traders were obliged to have their goods weighed in the Waag in order to promote fair trade in the city center.
