About "Asakusa Temple in Tokyo"

About the artwork

The Asakusa Temple (Senso-ji) is Tokyo's oldest and one of the most important Buddhist temples. Located in the historic district of Asakusa, it attracts millions of visitors every year and impresses with its history, architecture and lively atmosphere.

The temple was built in 645 AD and is dedicated to the goddess Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. According to legend, her statue was found by fishermen in the Sumida River and subsequently worshipped. This story makes Senso-ji a place of spiritual significance.

Your visit usually begins at the famous Thunder Gate (Kaminarimon), whose huge red lantern is a symbol of Tokyo. From there, the lively Nakamise-dori, a shopping street with souvenir stalls and traditional snacks, leads directly to the main temple.

At the main entrance to the temple, you can purify yourself with smoke from the large incense burner, which is said to bring health and good luck. Inside, you can pray, draw omikuji fortune cards or admire the ornate ceiling paintings.

In addition to the main temple, there are smaller shrines and a pretty garden on the grounds that invite you to take a stroll. Especially at night, when the temple is illuminated, it shows a very special side.

The Asakusa Temple combines spirituality, tradition and the vibrant life of Tokyo - a must for every visitor who wants to experience the cultural diversity of Japan.
