Prewar Aston Martins
1913 - 1940
Just before the outbreak of World War I, two men were successfully taking part in hill-climbing trips in a modified Singer sports car. But for engineer Robert Bamford and sports car driver Lionel Martin, building their own car was their ultimate goal. The company that built the car was established in 1913 (Bamford & Martin Ltd) and in 1914 the name for the new brand was announced as Aston-Martin. 'Aston' was taken from 'Aston Clinton', a famous hill-climbing location where Bamford had great success. It was also approved by Kate Martin, Lionel's wife, so the new car would appear high on an alphabetical list of car manufacturers.
