Serenity on board: A moment of reflection on the North Sea
This photo, taken on a cold October morning in 2024, captures a moment of serene calm aboard the ferry sailing between Newcastle and IJmuiden. What is immediately striking is the contrast: the deep, saturated colour of the deck clashes beautifully with the white fencing and gently moving, foaming waves in the background. But it is the subtle details that complete the story. Note, for example, the white line of the railing running into the depths, or the soft, almost glossy reflection of the morning light on the table top.

My inspiration for this image was simple: the pure, unadulterated calm of the open sea. After a night on the ocean, it was a relief to experience the silence of the early morning, with only the sound of the waves and the ship. I wanted to capture this atmosphere of calm and contemplation, a moment of reflection before the hustle and bustle of arriving in port. The orange lifebuoy represents not only safety, but also the promise of homecoming.

This work exudes a sense of calm and hope. It is a reminder of the beauty of travel and the power of nature. It is the perfect complement for an interior where one likes to escape from the daily hustle and bustle. The colours are powerful, but the atmosphere is soothing, and it invites the viewer to pause and reflect on their own journey, whatever that may be.
