In the garden, I saw an Atalanta butterfly sitting on the fence. This is a diurnal butterfly most often found in Dutch gardens. After fifteen to twenty days, the caterpillars crawl out of their pupa. Most characteristic of these butterflies are the bright orange-red bands. These run across the forewings and accentuate the underside of the butterfly's hind wings. The scientific name of this butterfly species was first published in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus as Papilio atalanta.
