About ‘Autumn Measure III — Late Gold’ by Whale & Sons

Golden yellow and orange dominate the upper half of the picture. Dark trunks cut through the foliage, providing the composition with its vertical framework. Nestled amongst the warm masses of colour are smaller areas of red, blue-grey and muted green. In the centre, the forest opens up, creating additional depth between the trunks.

Autumn Measure III — Late Gold focuses on the moment when autumn colours reach their greatest intensity. The foliage dominates the composition; the trees give structure to this abundance. Yellow and orange do not function as isolated accents but as a single, continuous force of colour spreading across the entire image.

The varying thicknesses and distances between the trunks make the rhythm irregular and lively. Cool blue-grey areas between the trees draw the viewer’s eye backwards and heighten the contrast with the warm foliage.

The texture consists of compact swathes of colour, dark underlays and open patches where cooler tones remain visible. The landscape remains instantly recognisable, but large sections function independently as fields of colour. Late Gold is the lightest and most saturated work in the series.
