From the water, The Hague reveals its most picturesque side. During an atmospheric boat trip with the Oranjevaart, the boat glides gently past the historic quays, where the city exudes a moment of serene tranquillity. In this image, we capture a beautiful and characteristic example of The Hague’s architecture on the Mauritskade: the side of the Orthodox Monastery of St John the Baptist.
The most eye-catching element of the composition is the lush climbing plant that has worked its way up the authentic brick façade. Autumn has let its artistic brush loose here. Fiery shades of deep red, warm orange and vibrant yellow form a spectacular natural colour palette that contrasts beautifully with the monastery’s classic, dark stone and its characteristic arched windows. The warm autumn sun bathes the building in light, whilst the clear blue sky makes the warm autumn colours stand out even more vividly.
On the left, the atmospheric landings and cast-iron balustrades of the surrounding buildings create a beautiful sense of depth and a truly Dutch urban atmosphere. This photograph captures the perfect balance between historic urban architecture, the changing seasons and the tranquillity of the water. An atmospheric work of art that brings a touch of warmth, The Hague’s history and the enchanting beauty of autumn to any interior. Perfect for a living room, study or hallway where a warm and soothing focal point is desired.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
