I nodded gloomily and pondered the extent to which the first digital quasi-pets—which were to be captured on the streets and on trains and domesticated on downright laughable miniature displays—had been insidious harbingers of the bleak future of unrestrained, loud talking with and against one another outside the designated private spaces and premises. From a distance, the persistent bellowing of a smock-clad ice-cream parlour owner, who had stubbornly declined the sponsors’ initially generous invitations, shattered the deceptive silence of cancelled events. The flavour of the season was far from settled.
