BIRDS OF A FEATHER is a landscape artwork that depicts nature, time, and camaraderie. The painting shows two old men sitting on a bench in a reddish-brown desert landscape. They are looking at the mountains in the distance and reflecting on time.
The men are alike, thinking and feeling the same; they are BIRDS OF A FEATHER. The birds are painted against a light blue-yellow sky with squares, representing sheets of paper. Very faint letters appear here and there.
The desert radiates wisdom and resilience, while the birds symbolize freedom and hope. This mix of real and unreal makes you think about how we are connected to each other in life.
I created the sky background by cutting out the squares in a layer of acrylic paint with a utility knife.
The brown-red landscape is a collage.
Finally, the men were painted over it.
I remembered that as a young girl I so much liked to cut images from magazines to paste them into school agendas, scrapbooks and even on my bedroom door. Add to this the fascination I always had for walls filled with old posters, flaking paint, scrappy billboards.. Read more…
