The bald eagle is an imposing, very large bird of prey ('flying door') of wetlands. Lives on fish, waterfowl and also carrion, especially when there is ice. Long a rare winter visitor, but nowadays even a breeding bird in the Netherlands in increasing numbers (2018: 14 pairs). Slow, deep wing beat, but often hovers on thermals in spring, summer and autumn. Usually solitary, but sea eagles may concentrate in places with plenty of food. Territorial, but pairs in food-rich areas can breed surprisingly close together. Has a courtship flight. Builds very large nest often used for years in the crown of a tree, in treeless areas also on the ground. Breeds from January into May (in Arctic areas). One clutch with usually 2 eggs. Incubation period 38 days per egg, starts incubating after first egg. Young fledge after 70-90 days; fed for at least another month.
