About ‘Bali; water palace’ by Dirk Lahuis

Sacred reflection in the water temple
This image shows the Pura Taman Ayun, a Balinese Hindu temple and garden complex in Mengwi, and immediately evokes the atmosphere of Bali's iconic water temples. The temple complex seems to float, embraced by the calm water that acts as a boundary between the earthly and the sacred. The water here is not just decoration; it is sacred tirta, essential to the purification rituals that define Balinese Hinduism. The architecture, with its distinctive meru towers (stepped roofs), reaches for the sky, but finds its likeness in the dark mirror of the lake.

The greenery surrounding the temple is tropical and full, fuelled by the volcanic soil and frequent rains. There is a serene calm, away from the hustle and bustle of southern beaches. The reflection in the water creates a sense of infinity and perfect symmetry. It is a place where the spirits of the water and the mountains meet. The silence is broken only by the gentle lapping of the water or the distant tinkling of a priest's bell. This is Bali in its purest, most mystical form.

Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
