The name of the barn swallow betrays the special bond that this bird has with humans. The nests of the barn swallow are preferably made in barns, sheds and such. These migratory birds stay in the Netherlands from April to October, the winter is spent in Africa. One swallow may not make a summer, but a whole group of swallows returning from Africa will give many people the spring fever. Barn swallows are real aerial acrobats: it is known that a male has more success with the females the longer his tail tips are. Males with long tails are probably more manoeuvrable and therefore able to catch more insects. This has of course great advantages when raising young.
