About the artwork

The Chausey Islands lighthouse was inaugurated on 15 October 1847. At high tide, it rises 39 metres above the sea. A second lighthouse, which can be seen in the photo, watches over one of the most beautiful bays on the Grande Île. It was built in 1867 on the Gros-Mont hill. At a height of 31 metres, it is the highest point on the main island. It has not been in use since 1939.

The Îles de Chausey form Europe's largest archipelago. 365 islands are said to be visible at low tide, 52 at high tide. According to some. Others say only 22 islands.

But only one of Europe's largest archipelago is inhabited: the Grande Île. The islands are connected by sandbanks. And their identical rock: granite. The locals sail around their island kingdom in small, flat boats called dories.

In the past, the boats were rowed. Today, this strenuous work is done by a motor. But on the first weekend in August, it's back to the oars. This is when the islands organise the Chausey Regatta.

The Îles de Chausey: a Normandy island paradise on the border with Brittany.
