The northern lights are an impressive phenomenon, which man has always associated with mysticism and the supernatural. It is caused by the influence of the earth's magnetic field on the solar wind. There are indications that the earth's magnetic field is in the process of turning, which happens once every 780,000 years. According to some sources, this would take place between now and the year 4000. There are different theories about the behavior of the magnetic field at the time of a reversal. In some models the field is completely lost during reversal, while in others there is a temporary decrease. What influence this will have for life on Earth is not entirely clear. Due to the temporary disappearance of magnetosphere, the solar wind will definitely get more influence in the atmosphere. Due to a decrease in the earth's magnetic field, the earth is exposed to a higher dose of harmful UV radiation for a few thousand years.
