About the artwork
Deception Island is a volcanically active island in the South Shetland Islands close to the Antarctic Peninsula. This island is the caldera of an active volcano that erupted in the years 1967 and 1969, causing significant damage to the scientific bases located there.
On Deception Island, you can find lots of wildlife such as fur seals, elephant seals and chinstrap penguins. The beaches are black because of the volcanic ash, and because the volcano is still active underground, you often see condensation vapours hanging above the surf because of the big difference in temperature.
With the white snow and black lava sand and rock, you can see and photograph beautiful and unique landscapes on Deception Island. This photo was taken at the beginning of spring when the first snow began to melt. Deception Island is accessible via ships that can enter the caldera through a narrow opening. Provided wind conditions allow, it is possible to sail in zodiacs to the beach and explore the area.
Deception Island is also a former whaling station and its remains are still clearly visible. These include large boilers that boiled the blubber to separate the oil and large storage silos. Furthermore, the aircraft hangar is still standing and there is a small cemetery.
An absolutely unique place. By the way, the photo looks black and white but it is not.
