This beautiful male kingfisher took some good time to brush his wings. A kingfisher's feathers appear brown in colour when viewed from above, but when viewed from below, the feathers are bright blue and orange in colour.
The kingfisher has a fast, straight flight, often just above the surface of the water. It can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour this way. Its wing beat is whirring, interspersed with a short glide. As a result, it is rare to see more than a flash of blue-orange from a kingfisher in flight. Kingfishers can fly up to 90 km/h when diving to catch fish.
