I took this picture in Sri Lanka where I was on holiday in September 2024.
They are beautiful birds and very colourful. They are insectivorous and agile fliers, grazing insects in flight too. The name clearly comes from its main food source. Bees, wasps, dragonflies and grasshoppers. The bee-eater lives in groups and therefore breeds in colonies in burrows and walls of banks and mountains, sometimes also in the ground.
The bee-eater lays eggs from May onwards. Has one clutch per year with 4-10 eggs, usually 5.

Greetings Monique
