Chinese opera is one of the oldest art forms in the world. The first school of opera dates back as far as the Tang Dynasty. Chinese opera developed from a traditional tradition with performances at court to spreading among the common people. There are an awful lot of regional types within Chinese Opera, all with their own dialects, masks, costumes and music. There are as many as more than 368 types and styles of which Peking Opera is the most famous. Costumes and make-up play an important role. Different patterns and characters on the players' faces describe the specific fate and traits of the respective character. Thus, the audience can already infer from the masks and costumes what the story is about. For example, red make-up means loyalty and courage and a golden mask means mystery.
