Berchtesgaden belongs to the administrative district of Upper Bavaria in the Free State of Bavaria. The municipality is part of the high alpine region in the southern district of Berchtesgadener Land, which is almost completely surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps and to the east, south and southwest by the Austrian state of Salzburg.
The Berchtesgaden region in southern Bavaria offers high peaks, romantic lakes and the only Alpine National Park in Germany.
In 1978, the first and only German Alpine National Park, the Berchtesgaden National Park, was created as a retreat for nature. Today, the Berchtesgaden National Park fulfills numerous other tasks related to nature conservation, research, recreation and education. With its network of trails with over 250 kilometers of hiking trails and paths, the national park is the perfect place for hiking in Bavaria. The nature reserve with its approximately 21,000 hectares is an untouched patch of nature in which man does not interfere. This has allowed a unique flora and fauna to reclaim its place in the Berchtesgaden mountains. The Berchtesgaden Alpine National Park is also part of the UNESCO Biosphere Region Berchtesgadener Land.
