About the artwork

The Brandenburg Gate is a must-see for every visitor to Berlin. Hardly any other sight is on as many tourist selfies as the great sandstone gate in the heart of the city. Berlin owes the Brandenburg Gate to King Frederick William II, who commissioned the great sandstone gate in order to have a dignified end to the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden. The gate is one of the largest and most beautiful buildings of the classicist period. It was built between 1788 and 1791 to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans the Elder, who was strongly inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. Two years after the Brandenburg Gate was completed, the Quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses, was placed on the roof of the gate by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1793. The sculpture shows a two-wheeled chariot pulled by four horses running side by side. Victoria, the goddess of victory, holds the reins. The quadriga was intended to symbolise peace entering the city.
