Between Two Thoughts by Color Square

The work depicts a woman’s face that appears to emerge from loose, transparent layers of paint. The portrait is not fully rendered; parts of the face deliberately fade into the light background. This creates an intriguing interplay between presence and absence, as if the woman were slowly emerging from the canvas or, conversely, dissolving back into it. The closed eyes provide an important point of calm. Dark eyebrows and long eyelashes contrast sharply with the soft palette of beige, sand, cream and warm skin tones. The nose and mouth are rendered in greater detail, with the subtle sheen and shadows around the lips in particular lending volume to the face. The second, partial half of the face in the top right-hand corner is striking. This appears to have been superimposed over the main portrait and lends the work a dreamlike and surreal quality, as if two moments, thoughts or identities are visible simultaneously.
Up close, one notices just how many small textures the painting contains: grainy areas of paint, frayed edges, vertical streaks and patches where almost only the unworked light area remains. Consequently, the face is not defined by traditional contour lines, but by fragments of colour, shadow and negative space.
The subdued earth tones lend the portrait an elegant and serene air. At the same time, the fragmented composition creates a sense of tension. The result strikes a balance between figurative portraiture and abstract art and fits particularly well within a modern, minimalist interior.
