About the artwork

Big windmill.
A polder mill or mill grinder is a windmill that moves water from a lower level to a higher level. It is also referred to as a watermill, but this causes confusion with the water-powered type of mill. This type of mill is found mainly in the polder areas of the central and western Netherlands. Polder mills have also been found in Flanders, for example in De Moeren in West Flanders.

Unlike the industrial mill such as a corn mill, a paper mill or a saw mill where the processing and production of materials produces a saleable product, the polder mill is perhaps the only type of mill where no direct profit is obtained for the miller. The polder mill is usually owned by a water board, which rewards the miller for services rendered.

The driving mechanism of a polder mill (the auger or scoop wheel) is fixed. The cap of a wooden octagonal polder mill can be rotated and the upper house of a teeter-totter mill and a spider mill, so that the sails are turned to face the wind. In the spider head mill, the lower tower is lower and the head is higher compared to the seesaw mill. The size of the mill is not a determining factor, small seesaw mills are smaller than large spinning head mills. The tjasker is even smaller, rests on a post or trestle and is completely rotatable. There is also a meadow mill, which turns itself to the wind.
