About ‘Bird photography - Sanderlings...’ by Bert v.d. Kraats Fotografie
This picture was taken at the south pier in IJmuiden.
The sanderling is best known from the beach and pier, where they forage in groups and quickly run away from the rolling waves.
It is unique among sandpipers as it lacks the hind toe.
They grow to about 20 centimetres in length.
