Young avocets photographed in early June in Friesland. Very special to witness from so close how they are about to stand under the wings of mother to warm up. The sun has just risen and it is still too cold outside to get warm while sitting in the grass or on the side. Many meadow bird fledglings, such as those of avocets, are nestlings and must provide their own food right from the egg. The parents provide protection while they are foraging and warmth if they cool down too much.
