The Loosdrechtse Plassen are a large water sports and nature area between Amsterdam and Utrecht. The term Loosdrechtse Plassen is the historically created collective name for all the lakes in the former municipality of Loosdrecht.
The Loosdrechtse Plassen form the central part of the Natura 2000 area called the Eastern Vechtplassen. This area is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds (Birds Directive Area) and for plants and other animals (Habitat Directive Area) and includes polders and lakes. During the winter months of 2014/2015, natural banks were constructed along the islands of Hoek, Robinson Crusoë, Marcus Pos, Geitekaai and de Meent. Poles were placed about 15 meters from the shore to protect the banks from erosion by the waves. Behind them, water and shore plants can develop.
