Birth, Pieter Jalhea Furnius, after Jan van der Straet, 1570
The three goddesses Lachesis, Atropos and Clotho sit in a room and spin the thread of life. They determine the life course and life span by measuring and cutting the life wire. One is holding the spinning top, the other is twisting the wire and the third is cutting it off. On the right in the background children play, on the left a woman lies in bed and three women take care of a newborn child. The print is part of a series of allegorical prints on human life.
