Blackness Castle, used as the setting for Outlander, is a fifteenth-century castle located in Blackness, 6.1 kilometres northeast of Linlithgow, in the Scottish region of Falkirk. The castle was built as a residence for the Crichton family. A few years after the castle was completed, it was taken by James II. Blackness Castle subsequently remained the property of the crown and served successively as a garrison fortress and state prison.
