Blue-breasted Plumeleteer (Hypuroptila cæruleogaster), John Gould So closely do the Hypuroptila cæruleogaster and H. Buffoni assimilate to each other, both in size and in general conformation, that it becomes difficult to divest oneself of the belief that they are merely varieties of one and the same species; but in contradiction to such an opinion, I may state that I have never seen specimens in any intermediate state of colouring, and that the young males at the age when the scaly breastfeathers are assumed for the first time, are blue and not green. This illustration has been restored to its original vibrancy by enhancing colors and removing unwanted marks. A monograph of the Trochilidæ, or family of humming-birds was published between 1849 and 1887 by English ornithologist John Gould. This monumental work depicts and describes all the known species of hummingbirds at the time - comprising 418 lithographic plates and information on 537 species."
