If you are in Cape Town, a visit to the colorful district of Bo Kaap should definitely not be missed. The district is located around the center and is easy to visit during a visit to the city.
Bo Kaap is known as the multicultural Muslim district of Cape Town. The inhabitants are descendants of the former slaves, brought to Cape Town in the 18th century from Southeast Asia by the Dutch VOC.
At the time of slavery it was forbidden for the slaves to wear colourful clothing. The abolition of slavery in 1838 was therefore the reason to give the houses their colours.
It is not for nothing that the houses in the district are always freshly painted. In the Bo Kaap it is tradition that after the period of fasting during the annual Ramadan the inhabitants repaint their houses.
