The Borobudur (Javanese: Barabudhur) is a Buddhist shrine 40 km northwest of Jogjakarta in Central Java province, in the centre of the Indonesian island of Java. Besides the Prambanan and the Kraton in Jogjakarta, it is one of Central Java's tourist attractions. Located near Mount Merapi, Indonesia's most active volcano, Borobudur was built in the period 750 - 850. Its name possibly derives from the Sanskrit "Vihara Buddha Ur", which loosely translated means "Buddhist temple on the mountain".
