Work 2 of 3 from 'Bottled Up Amber-Aqua' Glass Still Life.
Here, the decanter is slightly turned, with the glass stopper as a quiet crown. The colour runs from bright sea blue to warm gold tone at the base. The thick glass creates a long streak of colour across the top: cool on the left, warm on the right. On the neck, you can see fine scratches and a soft seam; traces of the making process that I am happy to let speak.
I photographed this in morning light, when the shadows are still long and friendly. The result is understated and homely-pretty above a narrow side table, on a shelf in the kitchen or in a minimalist office. The image combines naturally with light wood, ceramics and linen; it brings lustre without fuss.
The gist is simple: glass and light do the work. The rest of the room is allowed to relax and listen in.
