One early morning, I was standing on the quiet beach of Breskens, in south-western Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. In the distance was Vlissingen, across where the North Sea turns into the Westerschelde. Although the day began without bright sunlight or colourful skies, a special atmosphere hung over the coast.
