This picture was taken in Marrakesh, a city in Morocco known for its traditional architecture and rich details. The picture shows a brown wooden door. The door is solid and simple in shape, but the frame is richly decorated. Carved Arabic characters and motifs are visible around the door, directly referring to the influence of Islamic art and craftsmanship in Moroccan architecture.
The floor in front of the door is tiled with colourful square tiles. The patterns are geometric, as is common in Moroccan tile art. The same style of tiles also continues along the lower half-metre of the wall. This gives a rhythm and repetition to the picture. Above this tiled border, the wall is finished more simply, in a light earth tone.
The combination of wood, tiling and stone makes the composition calm but also interesting to look at. The use of earth tones and shades of blue and green in the tiles is typical of Marrakech's medina. This picture emphasises local materials, craft and atmosphere.
A snapshot of an ordinary door whose details tell something about culture, tradition and everyday beauty in Morocco.
