The golden rock temple of Dambulla is the best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. In five caves you will find 157 Buddha images and lots of wall paintings. After you have made a considerable climb to the top of a hill you can visit the five caves. The best place to start is at the back, and smallest, cave and then work your way forward. The caves then become more and more beautiful. Especially the cave of the great kings is magnificent to see. The many Buddha statues, a stupa and beautiful wall and ceiling paintings make this the most beautiful of the five caves.Visit the temple preferably in the morning, then you can make the heavy climb up largely in the shade.
