In Polonnaruwa, the Vatadage, a jewel of ancient architecture, protects at its heart a statue of Buddha, a silent witness to centuries of history and spirituality. Visitors approach this circular monument, unique in the Sri Lankan landscape, to admire the Buddhist art and the precision of the sculptures. The statue of Buddha, seated in a meditative posture, embodies peace and serenity. The Vatadage is surrounded by four finely decorated entrances, each facing a cardinal point, symbolising the universality of the Buddhist faith. The frescoes and relief sculptures evoke the former grandeur of this sacred place, once frequented by the faithful who came to meditate and reflect.
