About ‘Butterfly Tears - A Madama Butterfly Portrait’ by Arjen Roos

In Butterfly Tears, I capture the melancholic beauty of the classic opera Madama Butterfly in a contemporary digital portrait. The woman, dressed in an ornate, almost ethereal gown, closes her eyes while dozens of butterflies seem to rise from her hair like thoughts or memories. Every detail has been carefully worked out: from the delicate texture of her dress to the floating motion of the butterflies around her head.

The work breathes impermanence, loss and hope all at once - themes that fit perfectly with the tragedy of Cio-Cio-San from Puccini's masterpiece. The soft lighting, almost painterly colour palette and subtle contrast between emotion and aesthetics give the image an almost cinematic character. The butterflies, as symbols of both freedom and vulnerability, emphasise the inner world of the depicted woman.

This portrait was constructed entirely digitally, using several layers of photo manipulation, digital painting techniques and subtle post-processing. The result is a layered composition that fits into modern interiors where emotion, femininity and mystery are welcome.
