Hato is the rugged area on the north coast of Curacao where thorn bushes and cacti reign supreme. In this area one finds the Hato Caves, one of the tourist attractions of Curacao. The caves are believed to have been inhabited around the year 500 by the Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of Curaçao. In the slave era the caves were used by escaped slaves.
