The Calvary of Hendrik van Rijn or Crucifixion of Hendrik van Rijn is one of the oldest preserved panel paintings from the Low Countries. It was made in 1363 by a hitherto unknown master commissioned by Hendrik van Rijn, archdeacon of Utrecht. The Crucifixion of Hendrik van Rijn is an epitaph, also known as a memorial table. It comes from St John's Church in Utrecht and hung above van Rijn's tomb. It is one of the best-preserved examples of pre-ecclesiastical painting from the Low Countries, which are usually small in size. The piece reads: In the year of our Lord 1363, on the day before (the feast of) St. Boniface and his companions, died Lord Hendrik van Rijn, provost and archdeacon of this church and founder of this altar. Pray for him. The smaller van Rijn addresses his prayer to Mother Mary, while John Evangelist introduces him to her with a hand gesture. Mary then pleads with her son Jesus for van Rijn's soul.
